First of all let’s take a look at some Scripture:
2 Chronicles 7:14 14 If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
James 4:7-10 “7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”
OPENING COMMENTS – The time has come for God’s children to humble themselves and take a fresh look at what’s happening around us, especially in the area of Halloween. When I read words like “submit yourselves to God”, “draw near to God” and “humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord,” I begin to think that maybe we are too busy trying to be so accommodating in this generation that we forget that man’s ways are not God’s ways. Let’s take a look at Halloween, and what it really stands for and see if we can view this celebration the way God does.
Halloween is one of the biggest holidays spreading throughout the world today and it is celebrated on October the 31st. If you don’t think that people celebrate this day, just go for a walk on the eve of Halloween and look at all of the houses that are decorated for this celebration. I’ve heard Christians say, “We are having a Halloween party at our church and we are going to dress up as shepherds and angels and so on”. I don’t think it matters what we dress up as, because it doesn’t change the fact that we are celebrating Halloween. We Christians don’t see Satanists showing up at our churches on Christmas morning to worship our God with us and to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour, so why should we celebrate their activities and holidays when it goes against everything in God’s Word? Halloween is one of the highest holidays celebrated by witches, wizards, warlocks, psychics and occultists. In this age we are living in, I know we don’t want to believe that there is anything wrong with Halloween. After all, it’s just fun. Excuse my expression, but it conjures up pictures of the TV program, BEWITCHED, and a sweet, good witch called Samantha. I wonder if we haven’t been a little too accepting as Christians of the morality and movies that Hollywood has thrown at us. Sometimes we get soused to some things that we don’t even think to question them, but I believe it’s time to question Halloween because it is the worship of the god, Saman. What or who is this god and what does it all mean? Let me lead you into a closer look of this celebration called Halloween. First let me explain who Saman is.
SAMAN – He was known as the god of the dead, the grim reaper, and, on the eve of Saman, or the eve of Halloween, he would call up all the evil, wicked spirits to come out of the ground and walk the earth. Does that sound like something innocent that we should ignore? Let’s look at some history to try and shed some light on this whole issue.
CELTS – In Great Britain many years ago, there was a group of people called the Celts. Their priests, the Druids, believed that they were descendants of some supreme being (there were three classes of Druids: the PROPHETS, the BARDS and the PRIESTS). They were assisted by female prophets or sorcerers and supreme power was vested in an ARCHDRUID. These people were well versed in astrology, magic and the mysterious powers of plants and animals. These Druids were blood drinking, horribly wicked priests. There was nothing sweet or innocent about them.
WICKER BASKETS – The Druids would take wicker baskets, put human beings in them and cover the basket with a large lid. The basket would then be set on fire and rolled down the village streets, with the humans inside screaming for mercy. They could be heard all around the villages. Of course, this was an offering to the god, Saman, on the eve which is called Halloween.
SACRIFICES – This holiday was so important to the Celts that their priests would go from house to house, demanding treats and offerings so that the people in that house would not be harmed.
The Druids, by the way, were devil worshippers and they drew the Celts into that abominable life. They would teach that ghouls and goblins, or wicked spirits, would walk the earth on that eve. In order to appease these evil, wicked spirits, it was important to offer something to them. It started out that people would leave little treats, such as items of food, to appease these wicked spirits. The belief was, if they didn’t appease these spirits, they could spoil their milk or cause disease or death to their family and animals. Remember: the devil is never satisfied with a little. You see, the people thought that these evil spirits were the spirits of departed loved ones that would come back to visit them on the day of Saman, but, in fact, they were wicked, evil spirits of demons. I said before that the devil is never satisfied with a little, so, as the wickedness grew, the people gave in to this. Soon the treats weren’t enough anymore (isn’t that just like the devil). They began to demand animal sacrifices and blood was being shed now on that day. Sometimes people would cut the head off a goat and put it up on a stick in the hopes of warding off these evil spirits. That became the treat so that Saman’s wicked spirits would not do damage or wreak havoc in the villages or put a curse on their crops. Of course, that wasn’t even enough, so the new demand was for a human sacrifice. If you think the devil will settle for a little, you’re fooling yourself.
DRESSING UP – To go along with these spirits, the Druids would dress up and paint their faces in ghoulish looks and walk around in ghoulish clothing and pointed hats to appease these wicked spirits.
KNOCKING ON DOORS – They would knock on people’s doors and demand that, on the night before midnight, they offer a virgin from that particular family. You know the devil wants to destroy anything that is pure or represents purity.
JACK-O’-LANTERN – The Druids would leave out a jack-o’-lantern with a ghoulish carving to imitate the ugliness of the evil spirits. They would put a little piece of human fat in the bottom of the lantern to lighten up the ghoulish face. This was the sign that they would be back at midnight and that, if they weren’t appeased, the whole family would die. When they returned at midnight, if the virgin daughter wasn’t given for a sacrifice, then a hexagram was drawn on the door in blood. A “hex”, from the word, hexagram, means a spell or a curse. This meant that the house was cursed and that, by morning, everyone in that house would perish.
PARTAKERS – This is what we partake of when we celebrate Halloween. We dress up our children like the Druids did, we go from house to house, we say trick or treat. This says to me that we are taking part in Saman’s holiday. We see sweet little Christian children, chanting “trick or treat”. These children are imitating the Druids and don’t know the difference because no one wants to hurt their feelings by telling them the truth. See what we are partaking of?
POINTED HATS – Symbolic of witches’ hats, pointed hats are significant because they were known as the cone of power, meaning that anyone wearing this hat operated in divination, sorcery and occult power.
Can we honestly say that this would be pleasing to God? Ex 22:18 “Do not allow a sorceress to live. Deut. 18:10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, (NIV -Bible).
BROOM – This seems innocent enough, except for the fact that it is a symbol which means that the witch can astral project or spirit travel from one location to another. It goes all the way back to the Colombian age.
GHOSTS – When we speak about ghosts, most children, and even some adults, get this picture of CASPER, THE FRIENDLY GHOST. We have accepted so much today as being innocent that I wonder if we haven’t let ourselves get deceived into thinking that, just because something is in cartoon form, it is harmless. The ghosts that are symbolized here are the ones you will see in windows or hanging outside from a rope or wire. It looks like an upside down sheet with no feet, but this represents the wicked evil spirits coming up out of the ground to walk on the earth. We put these up in the windows of our homes and our schools. Isn’t it funny? There is nothing wrong with celebrating Halloween in school. It is supposed to be harmless, but anything to do with Christmas is supposed to be dangerous and shouldn’t be allowed in our schools. It makes me wonder how blind and passive we have become. Perhaps we are just a little too passive and maybe the time has come for the true church of Jesus Christ to stand up for what we know to be the truth, when the Scripture says in John 8:32″ And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” I think it means more than knowing about the truth, but knowing what the truth is and practicing it.
BLACK CAT – It is believed by witches that they can transfer their spirits into the cat. Spirits can get into animals. In the book of Luke there is the story of the man who was possessed by a legion of demons: “Then the demons went out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked” Luke 8:33. That is not to say that having or owning a black cat is evil or wrong. It’s not the cat’s fault that it is black – it is just that black cats are the preference in witchcraft.
ANIMAL SHELTERS – In October of 1994, an article appeared in a Toronto newspaper, saying that, just before Halloween, animal shelters in the city were going to be double locked and double guarded to protect the animals, especially the black cats, from being stolen and used in sacrifices. You may think this is far fetched.
BATS – We see these little bats hanging from the windows or from the porches of our homes. This is supposed to refer to the vampire bat that drinks blood and lives in dark caves. When ever involved in darkness, you like creatures of darkness.
VAMPIRISM – There are young people today that are involved with vampirism, or the drinking of blood. They are hooked on it and can’t stop themselves. On Carol Kornacki’s videotape, I heard the story of a 17-year-old girl who wrote a letter to a minister, explaining how she had been drinking blood and wanted to stop, but couldn’t because she craved for it. This is someone’s daughter that got trapped in the deception. When it comes to Halloween, I don’t think we should even act like it is there, never mind partake of it and join in the celebrations.
GRAVEYARDS – On Carol Kornacki’s videotape, I heard her talk about how she was a practicing witch for years before becoming a Christian and then a Minister of the Gospel. She said that she would go out on Halloween to some graveyard and lie on one of the graves. She believed that this would give her and other witches who would do the same power from the dead and that Halloween was supposed to be one of the most powerful nights to do this.
CARTOONS – They seem innocent enough and many Christian parents will let their children watch any cartoon that comes on television or that is recorded on videotape or played on some video game without any thought that it might be influencing their children’s behavior or beliefs. Many of the cartoons depict magic, incantations, spells, etc., and some out and out occultist beliefs. We see popular cartoon figures like the Smurfs who seem so harmless, but when Papa Smurf draws a hexagram when he gets in a confrontation with someone who is trying to hurt him and uses magic to bail himself out of the situation, doesn’t that alarm you? Is that what you want to teach your child to do when they face problems in life? This may seem very innocent, until some Christian parent sees their little child mimicking what Papa Smurf did, then it might not seem so innocent. The Bible says, in Prov. 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Are we so blind to think that this only works with things that pertain to Christianity? Or could it be possible, if we allow our children to be trained the opposite of Christianity by television, books, video’s, and music, that we might have problems getting them to depart from it when they get old?
Just by reading your child some Christian story for a few minutes at bed time will not deter the hours of influence they receive from these other sources, not to mention the influences at school and from playmates. What’s the big deal, you say? It can’t be all that bad. What does the Word say? In 1 Pet. 5:8 it says “Be self- controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”.
CONCLUSION – The devil wants to get into our homes, our lives and our churches. How could this happen? There are many ways: through television, radio, books, and, yes, through MUSIC. Some one may say, “My little girl was only dressed up like an angel”. No, I’m sorry, she is dressed up on Halloween, the eve of Saman, and she is partaking in the celebration of that holiday. Why give him the chance? Instead of celebrating Halloween and joining in the festivities, why not spend that time praying, worshipping or witnessing. Wouldn’t it be a powerful witness if all Christians would fight back this darkness and deception by spending this time before the Lord in prayer on the eve of this celebration? The time has come “to stand against the wiles of the devil”. What will YOU do? 2 Co 10:4 “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;” Eph 6:11 “Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil”.
FINAL WORDS My prayer is that the Lord would open our eyes to the truth in this generation and that we will not be afraid to stand up and speak the truth, even in the face of opposition, and be true to God’s never changing Word. I hope that this look at Halloween has challenged you to ask the Lord what He would have you do and then take the courage to be obedient to Him and set your heart to resist the devil and his works. Please feel free to copy this booklet or any part of it and pass it on to someone else.
